Arabic Through the Qur’an: A Linguistic Study of Selective Passages (Guidance Hub) @ Manchester @ Waterloo Centre | England | United Kingdom

DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this course is to instil within the hearts of Muslims a love of the Arabic language as the medium through which the Quran was revealed. The course aims to act as a springboard for lovers of the Quran to embark on a journey of studying the Arabic language in order to connect with Allah all-mighty’s final revelation to mankind.

The course will introduce students to the Arabic language by undertaking a linguistic study of selected passages from Surah Al-Kahf. This linguistic study will be inspired by the greatest works of Quranic exegesis produced by our pious predecessors, including:

Tafsir al-Tabari (d. 310 AH)

Tafsir al-Razi (d. 606 AH)

Tafsir al-Qurtubi (d.671 AH)

Tafsir al-Baydawi (d. 685 AH)

Tafsir Abu al-Suʿud (d. 951 AH)

Tafsir al-Alusi (d. 1270 AH)

This course is open to both absolute beginners as well as ardent lovers of the Arabic language. The only prerequisite is to know how to read the Qur’anic script. This course will not cover how to read Arabic script.

Mar 3 @ 9:00 am – 6:30 pm
Jihad, Violence, War & Peace in Islam (T Ramadan) @ Mile End, London @ Queen Mary University of London | England | United Kingdom

When did the idea of jihad, and Islam become so interchangeable? Why is jihad only equated with violence in the minds of so many in the West? Where does peace fit into the narrative and when is violence ever acceptable? IIDR invites you to join the debate in our latest addition to the Critical Reflection Series: Jihad, Violence, War & Peace in Islam. Hosted by the author of the course text himself, Prof. Tariq Ramadan, this one day seminar will offer you coherent, evidenced and practical answers to all your jihad related questions.

Nowadays, it’s not enough to simply repeat that Islam condemns the violence of those who terrorise civilians under the banner of jihad. It’s time instead to have a clearer, historically referenced and researched position statement. Find your voice at this course. Join us in unravelling one of the most misunderstood terms of our time, and discover how jihad is legitimately and illegitimately used to justify war. Tackle issues such as:

The multiple meanings and purposes of jihad
The five conditions for acceptable resistance (including freedom of religion and expression)
Terrorism
Religious diversity; and much more…

Speaking About Islam Today (Fazlur Rahman) @ Glasgow Tickets
Mar 3 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Speaking About Islam Today (Fazlur Rahman) @ Glasgow @ Andalus | Scotland | United Kingdom

Details
Speaking About Islam Today
Case study: Fazlur Rahman

In every age, place, culture and philosophical system, the unchanging truths of Islam have to be communicated to people in concepts, languages and images that they can understand. The modern European world is very different from that of our grandparents. Our children are taught to examine, analyse and question throughout the educational process. How do we express Islam in a way that makes sense to them and to the wider communities in which we live?

One of the people who struggled with this problem was Professor Fazlur Rahman of Karachi and Chicago (d. 1988). He was trained in classical Islamic studies, steeped in Arabic philosophy and for six years at the heart of the question of the role of Islam in modern Pakistan. He also held an Oxford doctorate, commanded four modern and two ancient European languages and taught Muslim and non-Muslim students for the last twenty years of his life in Chicago. His life and work is an exemplification of one attempt to struggle to speak about Islam in the modern world in a way that was true to the teaching of the Qur’an and the Sunna of the Prophet and yet was intellectually satisfying to the modern ‘western-educated’ mind.

On Saturday 3rd March in the Andalus Centre in Glasgow, we will explore some elements of his life and thought with Dr Chris Hewer (www.chrishewer.org). The day will comprise of four sessions:
• Introduction to the life and times of Fazlur Rahman
• How does the Word of God become the words that flow from the lips of Prophet Muhammad?
• Exploring the period from the customary practice of Muhammad in his lifetime to the compilation of the great Hadith collections.
• A thematic methodology to understand the ‘golden message’ of the Qur’an and apply it in our days.

Building Action Against Islamophobia (Inclusive Mosque Initiative) @ London Tickets
Mar 3 @ 12:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Building Action Against Islamophobia (Inclusive Mosque Initiative) @ London @ Free Word Centre | England | United Kingdom

DESCRIPTION
With Islamophobia on the rise, it is important for us to reflect on how we got here so that we can challenge it effectively.

Individual acts of intimidation and violence do not happen in a vacuum, and certainly did not begin with Brexit, or even 9/11. Anti-Muslim politics and policies have deep historical routes that are still evident today, and they target us all, especially the more vulnerable members of our communities: young, poor, refugee and migrant Muslims.

Join us as we unpack:

The ways in which Islamophobia manifests at the borders, in the education system, and the media

How this has come about and what it looks like right now

How to strategise together on ways to resist.

11.45 Doors open

12.00 Talk & Q&A with Suhraiya Jivraj on ‘Islamophobia: Historical Roots, Contemporary Anti-racist Strategies’

Islamophobia is part of a long historical trajectory of racialising the ‘other’, not just merely a consequence of 9/11. From the crusades to colonialism what is the subject of this ‘othering’ and why and how does it come about? What would an anti-racist approach to tackle its various manifestations look like? I will explore these questions drawing on critical race/religion and decolonising perspectives.
1.30 Lunch (Dhuhr jammat for those who want to pray together)

2.30 Workshops to learn about and strategise on:

– Islamophobia at the Borders: how government policy on keeping refugees and migrants out of the country particularly effects Black folks, Muslims, LGBT folks, women, and children.

– Islamophobia in Education (Latifa Akay & Lena Mohamed): how parents’ coercion into stating the nationalities of their children, the Prevent strategy’s focus on young people from poor communities, and the proliferation of hijab bans in schools are evidence of increasingly Islamophobic education policies.

– Islamophobia in the media (Farah Elahi): the relationship between the state and the media, how mainstream media outlets proliferate Islamophobia, and the reach and effect of far right media outlets.

3.30 Break

3.45 Closing panel

4.30 End

Who speaks for Muslims? (British Academy) @ Central London Tickets
Mar 6 @ 6:30 pm – 7:45 pm
Who speaks for Muslims? (British Academy) @ Central London @ The British Academy | England | United Kingdom

DESCRIPTION
This event is part of the British Academy’s season on Identities & Belonging

Muslims are regularly presented in a negative light in mainstream media, and as a result, the
word terrorism has become almost synonymous with Islam. Similarly, racist hashtags are commonplace online. Social media channels do however offer a space to counter toxicity. Sharing the findings of their British Academy funded research project into the #StopIslam Twitter campaign, Elizabeth Poole and colleagues discuss how – and by who – anti-Muslim sentiment is being challenged online.

Speakers include:
Dr Eva Giraud Lecturer in Media, Communication & Culture, Keele University
Dr Elizabeth Poole Lecturer in Media Studies, Keele University
Dr Ed de Quincey Senior Lecturer, Keele University

Free, booking required.

As our public events are free, not everyone who registers for tickets attends. To make sure we have a full house we allocate more tickets than there are seats. We do our best to get the numbers right, but unfortunately we occasionally have to disappoint people. Admission is on a first come, first served basis, so please arrive in good time for the start of the event.

If you have any questions about this event, please refer to our Public Events FAQ. If your question is not answered, please email events@britac.ac.uk.

Into The Mirror Seeking Spiritual, Personal & Intellectual Growth Through Sahih Muslim @ Bradford Tickets
Apr 6 @ 10:00 am – Apr 8 @ 7:00 pm

Why have we overlooked the roadmaps to
Spiritual, Intellectual, & Personality Growth
embedded in Sahih Muslim?
You know the answers are in the Prophetic narrations,
but did you know they were this specific? This powerful?

Many have turned to contemporary and secular programs…
…but so much of that is rooted in the teachings of our Prophet ﷺ…
…and the exceptional life of Imam Muslim.
Uncover what specifically ails your heart and customize a spiritual regiment throughout the year.
Break the current pattern of learning by info overload. Learn, instead, the skill of fluid intelligence.
Challenge yourself to think creatively and solve problems, modelling the examples of companions, hadith narrators and specifically Imam Muslim.
Learn about your personality, impulses and what makes you tick, so you can develop a personal plan for growth and self-discipline.
Strengthen your ihsaan muscle, develop new daily habits, and become the person you are meant to be.
Most importantly, embody the Sunnah, and make Hadith practically relevant in your daily life.

Healing Minds (The Lantern Initiative) @ Peterborough @ Orton Hall Hotel and Spa | Orton Longueville | England | United Kingdom

DESCRIPTION
Healing Minds is a ladies only event focusing on mental health and wellbeing.

The event will take place in a 17th century manor house hotel set in a beautiful and tranquil location. We have carefully selected a green natural space to help calm and soothe the mind, lift the mood and help to reduce any anxiety.

This event is open to everyone regardless of faith – for women who may have suffered or are suffering from depression/other mental health issues or for those who wish to understand mental health better perhaps in order to help a loved one, and also for those who are just needing upliftment, to hear from and engage with trained counsellors, life coaches and wellbeing experts.

The talks delivered will focus on understanding depression and anxiety, some of the possible causes, natural therapies, and will also explore treatment options. We will discuss postnatal depression, some of the cultural barriers and associated stigmas that exist within the community.

There will be a panel Q&A session and a chance to network at the end. Attendees will have the opportunity to speak to our guest speakers on a one-to-one basis after the Q&A session if they wish to do so.

We hope all those attending will leave the event feeling uplifted and anyone suffering with mental health issues will realise that they are not alone and there is lots of help available.

Our lives pass before our eyes like a fleeting vision. We are trying to grasp the moment, but every breath flees in exhalation, and the one that is in front of us is soon behind. A car moves down the motorway “swallowing” a mile or more of road a minute, and so pass our lives. We can’t hold on to the past, and as we anticipate the future it has already met us and flown by. Life is like a dream. Can you keep anything you saw in a dream? You may dream you are sitting on a throne with a crown on your head, surrounded by piles of treasure, but you can’t take the treasures with you when you open your eyes, nor will anyone treat you like a king even if you tell them that you dreamed it. Where is that dream now? How? What? It was just with me! We must, therefore, not allow our egos to convince us that we are kings with crowns on thrones in treasure filled rooms! But our temporary lives have a serious purpose: spiritual development That is our task, and a very serious one!

In an age where artificiality is rife, the twenty four hour clock and materialism is bellowing down over us. We struggle to find the work – life balance. Time has always been constant. With all our modern day comforts and luxuries why do we still struggle with the concept of time? Are we governed by time and can we be free of its constraints? How did the mystic, scholar Jalaluddin Rumi and his community utilise time? And what were the lessons they took?
Join us for a retreat tackling these very concepts and giving us remedies for these solutions and blocks in our mind.
22nd – 29th April 2018. Turkey, Istanbul, Konya & Iznik.

Ramadan is fast approaching once again! So for the 11th year running BAQS brings to you its most popular course: Journey Through the Quran 2018.

Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (s), so the greatness of this blessed month is inextricably linked to the Holy Book itself. But ask yourself – do you resolve each year that you will attempt to study the Quran? So many of us do, but fail to fulfill our best intentions. Are you aware of the key messages and lessons of each surah? And can you imagine the joy you will feel when you finally begin to understand what is being recited in the tarawih prayers this Ramadan? Let this year’s Journey Through the Quran course transform your Ramadan by teaching you how to engage with the Quran in a way you’ve never done before.

In the short space of just four days you will learn:

Key messages, themes and stories to assist your long-term learning;
A cohesive summary and overview of all 114 chapters;
The Quran in application: discover how to apply your knowledge practically in your everyday life;

Traverse the pathways of the Quran that run all the way from Al-Fatiha to Al-Nas. Under the tutelage of IIDR’s very own founder, Shaykh Hasan al-Banna, this course will give you the tools to re-establish your connection with the Holy Book and finally receive all those messages you’ve been missing.
