The paradigm of time, spiritual retreat, Turkey 2018 (Rumi's Cave) @ Kilburn, London @ Rumi's Cave | England | United Kingdom

Details
Our lives pass before our eyes like a fleeting vision. We are trying to grasp the moment, but every breath flees in exhalation, and the one that is in front of us is soon behind. A car moves down the motorway “swallowing” a mile or more of road a minute, and so pass our lives. We can’t hold on to the past, and as we anticipate the future it has already met us and flown by. Life is like a dream. Can you keep anything you saw in a dream? You may dream you are sitting on a throne with a crown on your head, surrounded by piles of treasure, but you can’t take the treasures with you when you open your eyes, nor will anyone treat you like a king even if you tell them that you dreamed it. Where is that dream now? How? What? It was just with me! We must, therefore, not allow our egos to convince us that we are kings with crowns on thrones in treasure filled rooms! But our temporary lives have a serious purpose: spiritual development That is our task, and a very serious one!

In an age where artificiality is rife, the twenty four hour clock and materialism is bellowing down over us. We struggle to find the work – life balance. Time has always been constant. With all our modern day comforts and luxuries why do we still struggle with the concept of time? Are we governed by time and can we be free of its constraints? How did the mystic, scholar Jalaluddin Rumi and his community utilise time? And what were the lessons they took?
Join us for a retreat tackling these very concepts and giving us remedies for these solutions and blocks in our mind.
22nd – 29th April 2018. Turkey, Istanbul, Konya & Iznik.

Email retreats@rumis.org to book your place.

120 Years Conversion to Islam (Family of Robert Reschid Stanley) @ Manchester @ British Muslim Heritage Centre | England | United Kingdom

DESCRIPTION
If you would like to come to this event – the tickets are FREE – but we would be so grateful for your contribution to our funding campaign; help us to get this incredible story out there. You will be encouraging Muslims in the UK AND working to share more with non-Muslims about our collective fantastic Islamic heritage.

Please make a donation – whatever you can afford – here:

https://www.launchgood.com/project/a_victorian_secret_muslim_revealed#!/

—–And Read On —–

On 22nd April 1898, a working class man from Stalybridge, East Manchester, converted to Islam.

Robert ‘Reschid’ Stanley was born with no advantages in life. He educated himself – becoming the Mayor of Stalybridge and a JP. He became curious about international politics. Through his work as a tea merchant, he met Muslims, learned more about international politics and the oppression of Muslims overseas and he was soon corresponding with the Caliph himself.

He became one of Sheikh Abdullah Quilliam’s closest friends – and Vice-Chair of the UK’s first mosque in Liverpool. He remained loyal to his family and friends in Stalybridge and yet when he died in 1911, the family chose to cover-up the facts of his conversion.

It took over a century later for the secret to be discovered. And in the meantime – with no knowledge whatsoever of his Gx3 Grandfather’s conversion, Robert Reschid’s own Gx3 Grandson had reverted to Islam.

Join the remarkable Robert Reschid’s family at the British Muslim Heritage Centre on the exact date of his reversion 120 years ago – in order to hear more about his story, how it is helping to forge greater connections between Muslims and non-Muslims and most importantly, how YOU might be able to help with his amazing legacy.

Our research and our book – will tell you more about the unusual life and times of Robert Reschid. We will explain all that we have learned about his fascinating childhood and youth, his religious beliefs, his journey towards Islam and his impressive connections and convictions. We will also be working to imagine the difficulties and challenges that his own family faced, when he made the unusual decision to become a Muslim.

And of course, on the 22nd April, we will also be remembering the other brave British citizens who embraced Islam and their personal struggles and sacrifices as they took on a new faith and direction in life.

Tickets are FREE, but we would like to ask you for a donation to our fundraising plan, in order that we can produce a book about the Life and Times of Robert ‘Reschid’ Stanley. So, when you have booked a ticket here at Eventbrite, please go to our special Muslim fundraising site:

https://www.launchgood.com/project/a_victorian_secret_muslim_revealed#!/

At this site, you can have a look at what we are going to be doing and can pledge whatever amount you can afford. There are lots of exciting perks for those who are captivated by what we are doing. Our ideas might even make a special gift for a loved on!

We are determined to keep all costs for the book and peformance LOW – because this important message must reach out to working-class communities who need more information in order to prevent growing Islamophobia in the UK.

From the hearts of Robert Reschid’s family and on behalf of the British Muslim Heritage Centre – THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR DONATION. Inshallah – we shall see you soon!

If you’ve been trying to get spiritually unstuck…
…you may have been looking in all the wrong places

The wall between you and your hidden desires…
…how long before it breaks?

We each have a personal image of whom we wish to be…
…and a personal vice stopping us from becoming that ideal.

That feeling of stagnation, stuck in the same place…
…how long before it hurts our emotions, our family, our ability to give back?

Why have we overlooked the road maps to Spiritual, Intellectual, & Personality Growth embedded in Sahih Muslim?

You know the answers are in the Prophetic narrations, but did you know they were this specific? This powerful?

Many have turned to contemporary and secular programs, but so much of that is rooted in the teachings of our Prophet ﷺ and the exceptional life of Imam Muslim.

◘ Uncover what specifically ails your heart and customize a spiritual regiment throughout the year.

◘ Break the current pattern of learning by info overload. Learn, instead, the skill of fluid intelligence.

◘ Challenge yourself to think creatively and solve problems, modelling the examples of companions, hadith narrators and specifically Imam Muslim.

◘ Learn about your personality, impulses and what makes you tick, so you can develop a personal plan for growth and self-discipline.

◘ Strengthen your ihsaan muscle, develop new daily habits, and become the person you are meant to be.

◘ Most importantly, embody the Sunnah, and make Hadith practically relevant in your daily life.

A Virtue of Disobedience (CAGE) @ Manchester @ Manchester M2 | Manchester | England | United Kingdom

DESCRIPTION
Byline Books and Byline Festival is proud to announce, in association with CAGE, a new ground breaking book entitled A Virtue of Disobedience by Asim Qureshi

Here’s what people are saying about the book:

“Asim Qureshi’s book restores and centres the human in today’s dominant, hyper-securitised society capturing its effects through an intertwining narrative developed through his personal experiences, Islamic understanding and a breadth of literature. It is a book which asks cutting questions of our living context, including our very own community that is simultaneously afflicted by trauma by a warring, domestic securitisation and contending with sections that perpetuate it. An important – and pressing – contribution to understanding our place in society today.” [Shaykh Zahir Mahmood – Islamic scholar]

“What should be done when protest does not right state oppression and persecution of dissent and minorities? Drawing mostly Islamic history but also from more recent African American and Jewish experiences, Asim Qureshi argues that, in this circumstance, disobedience to injustice becomes a virtue. I hope that this short thought provoking meditation on rightful responses to injustice will trigger a societal discussion for the conscience and future of liberal democracies.” [Marc Sageman – former CIA officer and author of Misunderstanding Terrorism]

“A first and foremost beautiful read, as a critical theorist, as an auto-ethnographer, and writer, I find Qureshi’s personal tone profound and loud, and it does what all good works of politics and anti-racism should. It makes visible the most intimate ways white power impacts us, destroy us, and has us dream about our futures.” [Yassir Morsi – author of Radical Skin Moderate Masks]

The book will be available for purchase and siging at the event.

We will have spoken word poetry by Sr Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan

*Full address of the venue will be posted closer to the date*

Refugee Shelter Design, building and engagement (RIBA) @ Central London Tickets
Apr 30 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Refugee Shelter Design, building and engagement (RIBA) @ Central London @ RIBA | England | United Kingdom

DESCRIPTION
‘Toward Healthy Housing for the Displaced’, the winning entry to the RIBA President’s Awards for Research 2017 Housing category, was written by a team of researchers from the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering at the University of Bath.

Their work highlights the neglected issue of indoor environmental conditions that displaced people are exposed to; conditions that are often extreme and can have serious implications for the health of the occupants. The reality is that there are 10’s of millions living in these ‘temporary’ camps, which often endure for years on end. Using literature review and collecting on-site longitudinal data and occupant interviews from camps in Jordan, the team sought to understand and document the range of climatic conditions faced by those living in the camps, the problems caused and the adaptions made to alleviate the situation.

With projects involving displaced peoples and camps making a regular contribution to the RIBA President’s Awards for Research, we have invited other leading researchers to present their work and provide a broader perspective on this often overlooked aspect of shelter for displaced people.

We invite you to join the discussion, along with researchers in-the-field, to explore ongoing efforts to improve the conditions of the many that find themselves forced from their homes and their normal lives.

Speakers:

Prof David Coley & Dr Jason Hart, University of Bath

Dr Nasser Golzari, Golzari-NG- Architects

Dr Irit Katz, University of Cambridge, Affiliated Lecturer, Department of Architecture

Dr Maria Faraone, Oxford Brookes University, Lecturer, School of the Built Environment

May 5 @ 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Dominion the throne of sulayman (Shaykh Abu Eesa Niamatullah) @ Birmingham @ Birmingham UK | Birmingham | England | United Kingdom

That is what the Prophet King Sulayman (upon whom be peace) was blessed with. And then some. The information that we have about him is enough for a thousand stories, many which you have read as a child.

Now is the time to look past the stories, and take lessons for your future.

It is difficult to find any story in the Qur’ān more fascinating than that of the Prophet Sulayman (upon whom be peace) – the detail is incredible, the facts awe-inspiring, the narrative as enjoyable as it can possibly get.

The real benefit for ourselves of a Qur’ānic study of Sulayman will be extracting key lessons for our time today, one dominated by our search for stability, direction and leadership in a wealth-obsessed, politically and socially chaotic mess.

Dominion is an experience, essentially a tafsīr journey, through a beautifully rich source bursting with content. We will investigate linguistic miracles you never knew existed. We will distil historical gems ranging from the relationship with his father, to the extent of his miraculous skills and control of those outside of the human realm, to of course the jaw-dropping episode with the Queen of Sheba. We will study the controversies, learn about the occult at his time, and learn how to protect ourselves from magic that is clearly above our pay-grade.

When an ant is given airtime by Allah jalla wa ‘ala in the Qur’ān, and used as a warning emphasised by the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), it inspired scholars to study the issue in detail. What will the lessons be? It is not just fanciful rhetoric to state that if we understand this story properly, we will safeguard against the incessant spilling of blood we witness every day. When you ask for guidance – all day in your daily prayers – as a Muslim, but learn that it is part of Judaism to ask for the “Temple of Solomon” to be rebuilt – all day in their daily prayers – then it inspired scholars to study the issue in detail.

What will the lessons be? It is not just fanciful rhetoric to state that if we understand this issue properly, we will have clear direction on the most politically important matter in the world: the Israel-Palestine situation.

The story of Sulayman was fun as a child, but as an adult it’s become serious. How serious are you about your history, but more importantly how serious are you about your future?

Dominion: lessons, admonitions, prophecies. You will never have heard this story quite like this before…

20 Questions and Answers on Black Europe, by Stephen Small, Professor of African American Studies at University of California, Berkeley.

The book puts Black people in Europe at the center of analysis, defines and interrogates the key aspects of Black Europe, and describes and elaborates the circumstances of Black people across twelve nations in Europe (listed below). Who are we, how did we get here, (historically) where are we located, what are our economic, political and social circumstances? What are our main organizations, what are our priorities and what actions, activities are we involved in – what is our agency – to confront institutional racism and achieve social justice. The primary focus is on citizenship and institutional racism – rather than on immigration and assimilation. An analysis of gender is at the core of the book and I examine how gender ideologies and institutional practices shape citizenship, politics, social inequality; as well as describing the main Black women’s organizations, their activities and priorities for knowledge production and social justice. While the book draws a great deal on the academic literature on these issues, I also immerse myself in what I call knowledge production outside the academy, but which I mean oppositional knowledge, independent knowledge, and collaborations between radical academics and community activists and intellectuals.

Most books and journal articles on Black people in Europe focus primarily on nation-specific studies, and primarily on what I call the usual suspects – the UK, France, Netherlands, maybe Germany. They highlight what is unique and specific to each nation – what I call the distinct differences across nations. In this book, I challenge the nation-specific approach, opting instead to focus on what is common to the Black experience in nations across Europe. In this way, I highlight what I call the striking similarities in our experiences. These experiences include an ambiguous hyper-visibility, an entrenched vulnerability and irrepressible resistance and resilience. They also include institutional racism, and direct and palpable legacies of colonialism and imperialism. I argue that Black people in Europe have contributed massively to the political, economic and social development of Europe, and that Europe is more democratic, more humane than would have been without our presence. I argue that Black social mobilization and organizations (including Black faith communities) exist because mainstream European institutions have failed to provide full citizenship and equal opportunities to Black people. And I argue that Black social mobilization, community actions and Black and multi-racial organizations will continue to exist and will be the main reason any that racial inequality and injustice will continue to be challenged in Europe.

There are 46 nations in Europe, with more than 770 million people. I estimate slightly more than 7 million Black people in Europe with more than 90% of all Black people in Europe today in twelve nations. These nations are the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Portugal and Belgium; Spain, Germany and Italy; Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the Republic of Ireland.

This book builds on the research I have been doing on Black Europe for the last 30 years, including my time as Director of UC, Education Abroad program in Bordeaux and Toulouse, where I lived in 2002-2004; my time as UC, Director of Education Abroad Program in Madrid, where I lived in 2013-2015. And my time as Extraordinary Professor for the Study of Dutch Slavery and its Legacies, at the University of Amsterdam (2010-2015). The book benefits in particular from the research and teaching I’ve done since I began working with my friend and colleague, Kwame Nimako in the Black Europe Summer School (BESS). I have been a faculty member on BESS every year since it began in 2008; and have interacted with more than 200 participants (gradates, post-docs, professor and undergraduates) from more than 15 nations in Europe, as well as from the US, Canada and Latin America. As well as with faculty members. It is clear that the book has benefited directly from my teaching in BESS and from these interactions. I am grateful to everyone and I thank BESS faculty and participants in the acknowledgments to the book.

Journey Through the Quran (IIDR) @ Mile End, London @ Queen Mary University of London | England | United Kingdom

Ramadan is fast approaching once again! So for the 11th year running BAQS brings to you its most popular course: Journey Through the Quran 2018.

Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (s), so the greatness of this blessed month is inextricably linked to the Holy Book itself. But ask yourself – do you resolve each year that you will attempt to study the Quran? So many of us do, but fail to fulfill our best intentions. Are you aware of the key messages and lessons of each surah? And can you imagine the joy you will feel when you finally begin to understand what is being recited in the tarawih prayers this Ramadan? Let this year’s Journey Through the Quran course transform your Ramadan by teaching you how to engage with the Quran in a way you’ve never done before.

In the short space of just four days you will learn:

99 personal development lessons based on Quranic teachings;
Key messages, themes and stories to assist your long-term learning;
A cohesive summary and overview of all 114 chapters;
The Quran in application: discover how to apply your knowledge practically in your everyday life;
1000 Arabic words from the Quran; and so much more.
Traverse the pathways of the Quran that run all the way from Al-Fatiha to Al-Nas. Under the tutelage of IIDR’s very own founder, Shaykh Hasan al-Banna, this course will give you the tools to re-establish your connection with the Holy Book and finally receive all those messages you’ve been missing. Make this your year to achieve something remarkable in the month of Ramadan.

Men

Change
Ethics
