Geometric Patterns of Arts and Crafts in Islamic Lands (The Prince’s Foundation) @ Central London Tickets
Jan 29 @ 6:30 pm – Mar 19 @ 9:00 pm
Geometric Patterns of Arts and Crafts in Islamic Lands (The Prince's Foundation) @ Central London @ The Prince's Foundation School of Traditional Arts | England | United Kingdom

In 2013, The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts published the book Arts and Crafts of the Islamic Lands. The first half of the book concentrates upon the philosophy and the drawing of geometric patterns. It particularly features the ground-breaking Islamic pattern analyses of Paul Marchant who along with Professor Keith Critchlow taught the geometry classes at the school for a quarter of a century.

Many of the pattern analyses in the book are condensed into single diagrams and so the object of this course is to present various of them as step-by-step processes. So if you enjoy drawing beautiful patterns and contemplating their spiritual resonance this is a practical study course that you will enjoy.

What should I bring?
All materials will be provided on this course.

You may find it useful to bring a notebook and take notes.

Who is this course for?
To participate in the course some previous experience of drawing geometry would be useful though not essential. Every pattern process will have its own handout that participants can take away for further study.

What days do I attend?
This course will take place over 8 consecutive Tuesday evenings.

Do you offer concessions?
Yes, we offer concessions for full time students and OAPs.

To receive a concession, please apply via our online form.

Mar 6 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
The Transmission of Islamic Calligraphy A Living Art (The Prince's Foundation) @ London @ Hallam Conference Centre | England | United Kingdom

The importance of writing the sacred scriptures makes Islamic calligraphy occupy the highest place in the hierarchy of Islamic visual arts and culture.

Like other sacred arts, the transmission of the art of calligraphy is based on the master – student relationship. The student not only learns the technical aspects of correct gesture, rules of proportion and harmony, but also, in effect, the cultivation of virtues which will ultimately transform his or her artistic practice.

This lecture will focus on the methods of transmission used in the Ottoman school of calligraphy, past and present, the question of creativity within the classical canons, and the process of reaching mastery in this art.

The lecture will take place in the Oxford Suite at the Hallam Conference Centre, 44 Hallam St, Marylebone, London W1W 6JJ.

Divine Love and the Art of Islam (The Prince's Foundation) @ London @ Hallam Conference Centre | England | United Kingdom

God’s love for human beauty, and human love for divine beauty, are explicit themes of the Quran and the Hadith. Muslim scholars developed a general theory of love and beauty that came to permeate religious thought and display its fruit in the various realms of art and literature. Of particular interest are theories of imagination, an ambiguous realm that can pull the soul toward the divine beauty or drive it in other directions.

This lecture will take place in the Council Chamber at the Hallam Conference Centre, 44 Hallam Street, London W1W 6JJ. Please click here for a map to the venue.
