Islam & Homosexuality (IIDR) @ Mile End, London Tickets
Jan 20 @ 9:00 am – 6:30 pm
Islam & Homosexuality (IIDR) @ Mile End, London @ Queen Mary University of London | England | United Kingdom

Islam & Homosexuality is a groundbreaking one day course that explores the Islamic perspectives on homosexuality as part of IIDR’s Critical Reflection Series.

We need to adopt a multi-faceted approach when dealing with the question of Islam and homosexuality. Merely stating the normative position of the Abrahamic faiths does not allow for a nuanced discourse. Deeper questions arise – that of how ‘good and bad’ or ‘moral and immoral’ are determined. At this stimulating new course, explore freedom of belief and practice, equality and human rights, biological imperatives and sexual orientation, sexuality and identity, and so much more. This course will attempt to present a methodology in navigating the Islamic, theological and moral stances in an age of moral relativity.

The course will address the following questions:

How is good/bad and moral/immoral determined in Islam?
What do the primary Islamic texts – Quran and Prophetic narratives, say about homosexuality?
Is there evidence of people with diverse sexual orientations at the time of Prophet Muhammad (s) and if so, what were the implications of that?
To what extent is sexual orientation pre-determined?
What is the relationship between fitra and sexuality?
Can Muslims reconcile between Islam’s theological stance on homosexuality and supporting the rights/freedom of others who hold a contrary position and wish to be treated equally?
Are Islamic teachings homophobic?
Can homosexuals – Muslims or non-Muslims – ever be discriminated against?
What right does Islam or any other faith have to dictate moral norms which infringe on the basic human right of choosing one’s sexuality?
How do we navigate universal truths in an age of moral relativism? And much more…
Join us by registering now for this one day study on homosexuality, and leave informed on every aspect of Islam’s true views on the subject.

Our Mosques Our Future conference (Muslim Council of Britain) @ Central London Tickets
Jan 20 @ 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
Our Mosques Our Future conference (Muslim Council of Britain) @ Central London @ Euston London | England | United Kingdom

DESCRIPTION

Our Mosques Our Future
#morethanaprayerspace
A one day conference organised by the Muslim Council of Britain
The first mosque in history – the Prophetic Mosque in the city of Medina – was a space where people came together not only in ritual worship but also as families and as a community. It also played a vital role in interfaith work, charity and education.
Today there are an estimated 1,500 mosques in Britain. British Muslim communities must ask themselves:
Are our mosques today failing to follow the Prophetic model?
How many are truly providing services beyond just a prayer space?
And in an increasingly challenging environment, how is the role of the mosque in 21st century Britain changing?
Join us for an action-packed day on 20th January 2018 featuring TED-style talks, keynote speeches and interactive workshops exploring the challenges and opportunities for mosques in Britain today.
Perhaps now it is more important than ever to embody the Prophetic Mosque model.
The venue will be sent to you via email closer to the time.

Islamic Principles of Investment – One-Day Seminar @ Surrey Quays, London Tickets
Jan 20 @ 9:30 am – 4:30 pm
Islamic Principles of Investment – One-Day Seminar @ Surrey Quays, London @ Canada Water | London | England | United Kingdom

Blessed is the wealth of a Muslim from which he gives to the poor, the orphans and to needy travellers. (Or the Prophet said something similar to it) No doubt, whoever consumes wealth illegally will be like the one who eats but is never satisfied, and his wealth will be a witness against him on the Day of Resurrection.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 1465]
Muslims in the West today have an abundance of opportunities to invest their money in, but unfortunately many are unaware of what is actually permissible. It’s difficult enough to know whether a potential opportunity makes good business sense, but even less seem to consider if the investment is acceptable according to the shariah.

Attend our 1-day seminar on the Islamic Principles of Investment and you will learn the criteria you should apply to any opportunity before parting with your hard earned money. The seminar will cover amongst other topics:

• What makes a transaction impermissible?
• Can we buy Bitcoins and other Cryptocurrencies?
• Are stocks and shares permissible to own?
• How do we treat digital assets?
• What should you do with impure income?

Genocide Memorial Day @ Central London Tickets
Jan 21 @ 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Genocide Memorial Day @ Central London @ P21 Gallery | England | United Kingdom

The theme of this year’s GMD is Failures of International Institutions in preventing genocide: Myanmar’s Rohingya and Bosnian genocides

WHERE: P21 Gallery, 21 Chalton St, Kings Cross, London NW1 1JD (nearest stations: Kings Cross St. Pancras / Euston / Euston Square)

WHEN: Sunday, 21st January 2018 from 12 – 4pm

Watch LIVE on IHRC.TV and IHRC Facebook from around 12pm (GMT)

CONFIRMED SPEAKERS:
Zarni Maung – Genocide scholar and Burmese human rights activist

Ramon Grosfoguel – Professor at the Department of Ethnic Studies, UC Berkeley

Daniel Feierstein – Director of the Centre of Genocide Studies at the National University of Tres de Febrero in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Professor at the University of Buenos Aires

Demir Mahmutcehajic – Bosnian activist and co-founder of Islamic Human Rights Commission

GMD began in January 2010 with the convergence of two ideas. The first necessity was to counter the idea that some genocides are more extraordinary than others and therefore worthy of greater attention. The second necessity was that this wouldn’t just be a theoretical remembrance but begin to identify current genocidal practices with a view to stopping them.

IHRC is a campaigning organisation, we believe it is important for us to not just commemorate the past but also to recognise the genocides and/or genocidal acts taking place in the modern era, with a view to stopping these from happening in the present or the future. The philosophy of this project by IHRC rejects the notion that there is a hierarchy of victim depending on their background. By highlighting the people and power structures who have perpetrated genocides or genocidal acts, we want to hold the perpetrators to account within the framework of GMD, as well as remember the victims of these genocides and genocidal acts.

The situation of Rohingya Muslims is really grave and undoubtedly, a genocide is taking place in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. The United Nations has ‘expressed deep concerns’ and the levels of violence have increased day by day.

Genocide Memorial Day will be a great opportunity to ask to our renowned speakers different questions such as the difference between ethnic cleansing and genocide; about the silence of the international community and Aung San Suu Kyi in the Rohingya crisis; what lessons have been learned from the Bosnian genocide; the failures of International Institutions in preventing genocide and much more!

Course Introduction

This course is presented with the premise that the existence of differences seems to be an unavoidable phenomenon, but intends to establish that Islam provides guidelines to deal with conflicting views. The course explores whether we can avoid or lessen differences and how we can be united with the presence of differences. Learn how to identify an acceptable difference from one that is illegitimate. The course analyses the underlying causes that lead to differing and discusses the guidelines that rank differences into those that are major or minor and how we can practically deal with them. The course also responds to the question, what should our stance be concerning shadh (unusual/illegitimate) opinions even if they be from scholars?

Interactive session promoting positive body image @ Whitechapel, London Tickets

Interactive session promoting positive body image @ Whitechapel, London @ London Muslim Centre | England | United Kingdom

Each week we see thousands of images promoting the female – and increasingly male – form of the ‘acceptable’ standard of beauty. As psychotherapist and psychoanalyst Susie Orbach highlights, these homogenous images are everywhere making it impossible not to be exposed to them. As a result, many are left feeling dissatisfied with how they look in comparison to these unreal depictions of people.
As Muslims, this makes many feel even worse as there is also a feeling of guilt for even having these kinds of ‘superficial’ and ‘ungrateful’ thoughts in the first place. With billions invested globally in making people feel like they should be modifying their bodies, it’s understandable why so many people suffer from negative body image issues. You’re not alone. This is the first of its kind session that opens up this sensitive topic to discuss the reality of the beauty industry and its repercussions for many people who have been made to feel unhappy with their bodies. We also look at ways of promoting positive body image within Islamic and positive psychology perspectives.
Join us for thought-provoking presentations, discussions and activities.
You will leave the session not only equipped with practical ways to increase your own positive body image but also helpful information to share with absent family members, friends and colleagues.

Who speaks for Muslims? (British Academy) @ Central London @ The British Academy | England | United Kingdom

DESCRIPTION
This event is part of the British Academy’s season on Identities & Belonging

Muslims are regularly presented in a negative light in mainstream media, and as a result, the
word terrorism has become almost synonymous with Islam. Similarly, racist hashtags are commonplace online. Social media channels do however offer a space to counter toxicity. Sharing the findings of their British Academy funded research project into the #StopIslam Twitter campaign, Elizabeth Poole and colleagues discuss how – and by who – anti-Muslim sentiment is being challenged online.

Speakers include:
Dr Eva Giraud Lecturer in Media, Communication & Culture, Keele University
Dr Elizabeth Poole Lecturer in Media Studies, Keele University
Dr Ed de Quincey Senior Lecturer, Keele University

Free, booking required.

As our public events are free, not everyone who registers for tickets attends. To make sure we have a full house we allocate more tickets than there are seats. We do our best to get the numbers right, but unfortunately we occasionally have to disappoint people. Admission is on a first come, first served basis, so please arrive in good time for the start of the event.
