Notion of Freedom – A Haitham Khatib Exhibition (Islamic Human Rights Commission) @ London @ Islamic Human Rights Commission | England | United Kingdom

Details
LAUNCH DATE: Thursday, 26 July from 6.30pm

WHERE: IHRC Bookshop, 202 Preston Road, Wembley HA9 8PA

Join us for the latest exhibition at IHRC Gallery featuring Palestinian artist and photojournalist Haitham Khatib. Raised in the West Bank, he has lived his life under illegal Israeli occupation. Drones, military checkpoints and security zones are an everyday reality for him.

From September, IHRC Gallery will be featuring the Haitham’s works. He describes himself as a self-taught video journalist, photographer and documentary film-maker. He has used photography as a tool for self defense with output often being used as evidence in Israeli courts.

The exhibition will feature an exploration of Haitham’s life – the beauty he finds in the everyday and the mundane. But it will also showcase the horrors of the occupation. Mixed media including photographs, slides and video will be on display. And we hope to also be in conversation at the launch with Haitham who is based in Palestine.

Haitham’s life has been defined by the suffering of his people at the hands of Israel and the peaceful demonstrations organised and attended by his village. He struggles with own personal tragedies too since the loss of his young son to cancer. Yet Haitham’s art is hopeful and uplifting. His documentation of Palestinain protests is eye-opening.

Entry to the exhibition is FREE. Refreshments will be served at the launch.

Islam and Sexuality (Islamic Institute for Development and Research) @ Aldgate, London @ London & Online | United Kingdom

Did you know that there are over 80 sexual references in the Quran? And that the person who spoke about sex most openly and honestly was the Prophet Muhammad (s)? Did you know about the contribution of Muslim thinkers to the educational field of sexology? It’s a growing discipline that studies the effect of human sexuality on the self and society. Isn’t it time we talked about it more openly in a faith context?

For the very first time, IIDR is offering a mature exploration of sex and sexuality from a scientific and an Islamic perspective. In this brand new course you can expect to study the biological, psychological, sociological and spiritual aspects of sexuality.

We live in a society where sexuality is becoming all too relevant at younger and younger ages. If we as adults do not know how to intellectually engage in this dialogue with our peers, how can we expect to broach the subject in an Islamic way with the younger generation when the time comes? It’s time to talk. Honestly, accurately and islamically. Whether you’re an education or health professional who encounters these issues at work, or simply a concerned parent who wants to know how to broach the subject with their children, this is course is for you.

Topics will include:

Sexuality in the Quran
Common sexual issues relating to men and women
When bad theology leads to bad sexology
Abuse: Female genital mutilation
Pornography
Sexual orientation
The psychology of love and sex
Sexual frustration and addiction
Erotic intelligence
Ethical issues in the field of sexology
The latest research in the field; and much more.
This groundbreaking seminar will be taught by Imam Yassir Fazaga, a renowned scholar and professional therapist who has special training in sex therapy. Expect a highly informative, positive and islamically proper course. Find a safe space to discuss these issues where all are welcome and mutual respect is key.

This course is supported by Penny Appeal.

This is the longest Surah in the Qur’an with 286 verses and revealed over the span of 9 years. Yet there is well connected textual coherence between its verses which could be explained through ‘ring composition’. The first half of the Surah is a survey of the Children of Israil and the second half of the Surahs lays down the foundation of the Muslim Ummah with detailed laws on acts of worship, family life and governance of state affairs. It is essentially a summary of the contents of the entire in more detail than in the opening chapter.

Brooke Benoit is a magazine editor who, dissatisfied with her own education, originally unschooled herself in the 1980’s. She currently unschools her seven children, preferring the radical democratic or Sudsbury-style of home educating. Here about her experience and meet other like-minded individuals!

This is your chance to network with other mums, learns how to look after yourself and have some fun too!

How To Survive Homeschooling: A Selfcare Guide For Moms Who Lovingly Do Way Too Much is a unique homeschooling book that puts the parent first. While homeschooling continues to become increasingly popular, the focus remains on the children, with little attention given to the all-sacrificing parent(s) who often struggle to find balance and support in their uniquely challenging role. How To Survive Homeschooling offers holistic strategies for taking care of self, dealing with external pressures and building a support system to manage the daunting tasks of homeschooling.

Fitra Journal: Muslim Homeschooling is a bi-annual journal edited by Brooke Benoit and written by an international collection of Muslim homeschoolers sharing their experiences of using a variety of homeschooling methods. The journal publishes personal accounts, methodology explanations, resource reviews and a bounty of general homeschooling information and ideas, always from a deen-centered perspective, giving readers a glimpse of the infinite ways to mould their own home education practices.

Brooke Benoit is a magazine editor and artist who attended the San Francisco Art Institute and earned a degree in Rhetoric from the University of Alaska Anchorage. After homeschooling herself for high school she began college at fifteen years old. When it came time to enroll her children in school, instead Brooke immersed herself in learning the various styles and means to homeschool. She has continued to work, returned to school and moved abroad while homeschooling. Brooke currently facilitates her seven children’s education (at home) on the southern coast of Morocco where she also enjoys photography, travel and lively chit-chat.

Muslim Women in the Workplace (Guest Ustadha Ameena Blake) @ London Tickets
Aug 18 @ 2:45 pm – 5:15 pm
Muslim Women in the Workplace (Guest Ustadha Ameena Blake) @ London @ Farringdon London | England | United Kingdom

DESCRIPTION
Throughout Islamic history women have been in the forefront of society, taking active part in communal life in a variety of different roles, not only as mothers, daughters, sisters and wives. One of these roles involved being part of a workforce that drove local, regional, and national economy. Not only were women active community members and philanthropists, they were encouraged and well respected.

Many of us do not realise that by being part of the workforce today, we are effectively giving dawah through being who we are and how we are. Although many sisters are at odds with how to balance their work and spiritual identities, can they be one and the same or do they need to be separate? There are also the issues of creating that balance between work and familial responsibilities. Life as single Muslim, a carer, or a married woman with or without children each brings its on sensibilities.

Join us for a rich discussion on the challenges and values of Muslim Women in the Workplace and the ways in which we maintain our Islamic etiquette. We are honoured to have as a guest speaker, Ustadha Ameena Blake who will talk to us about the topic at hand through an Islamic perspective. For all that we do in life, it is always good practice to check in with our faith and remind ourselves of the Islamic principles.

Please note that this is a sisters’ only event and for security purposes venue details will only be disclosed to sisters who confirm their place.

Light refreshments are available and any sisters interested can join us for dinner to continue discussions at a local restaurant after.

The venue is a short walk from Farringdon Station (Thameslink, Metropolitan, Hammersmith&City and Circle lines) and St John’s Street bus stop. There may be some limited on-street parking, although it’ll be on a first come first serve basis pending availability.

From South Yorkshire, UK; Ameena Blake embraced Islam in 1992.

Her Academic qualifications include undergraduate in English Studies, Post Graduate in teaching and MSc in Leadership and Management. She is currently finishing a Masters in Islamic Studies at MIHE, Leicester. Ameena has studied Islam under various Shayukh from 1994 onwards including Dr Jamal Badawi and Shaykh Abdul Aziz Atiq, Shaykh Riad Ouarzazi, Dr Ataullah Siddiqui and Shaykh Faisal Manjoo.

Ustadha has been active in dawah since 1997. Roles have including on Mosque Board of Trustees as chair, Vice President of MAB and Assistant Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain and Head teacher of a girls Islamic school. Currently she is the national director for Eden Houses UK, a charity running Muslim friendly women’s refuges chain of supported houses for women and children in need.

She lectures about Islam nationally and internationally and is also active online. She specialises in topics including tazkeeyah and spiritual lectures, women in Islam, living dawah, Seerah, Qur’an and Sunnah and Shariah having appeared at conferences, fundraisers and events including universities across the UK, Shariah University Kuwait, the Grand Mosque, Kuwait; Stockholm Mosque, Sweden and Spain. She gives regular lectures online and has appeared on channels including Sky TV, Islam channel, BMTV, BBC, Al Jazeerah, Kuwaiti TV and Iqraa TV.

Pass the Mic Sis is an event series providing a platform for Professional Muslim Women to support, learn, and network with each other within a series of business oriented sessions. Considering the current social, political, and economic climate rather than relying on others, we need to unite in order to represent our own voices, rising above the negative press we are often given. We do so in a positive and engaging manner befitting the etiquettes of our faith. We aim to gain confidence, share our skills, and learn from each other’s experiences within a professional setting.

Ultimately it’s about owning our own voices through unity in sisterhood. Our aim is to attract professional Muslim women across industries at various stages of their careers. In shaa Allah.

If you share this vision of positive enlightenment and self-development then why not join us at our next session?

Marriage Matchmaking Event (Nisful Imaan Marriage Service) @ London @ Brick Lane Jamme Masjid | England | United Kingdom

This event is to help muslim brothers and sisters to find their future spouse in a halal way.
About this Event
Nisful Imaan Marriage Service introduces Marriage Matchmaking event where muslim brothers and sisters can find their future spouse in an halal way.

How it works – in detail…

– Arrival, registration and profile completion, ID number and Username/Password will be given to each person. (Once you have paid on Eventbrite please contact our Event Team on 07985224655 so that we can send you a link to complete your profile)

– In short our events is structured two parts – Group ice-breakers and then followed by one-to-one meeting with the participants and we have devised an in-house Marriage Event Website to facilitate the whole process.

– A person who is interested in participating in the event will be asked to fill in a profile on our Marriage Event Website, a link will be sent after registration and payment (usually a week before the event) and the profile will contain basic biographical information as well as space to add what you hope to offer a potential spouse and you they are looking for. We will be explaining how the Event Matchmaking system works on the day.

Group ice-breakers

Each individual is assigned a numbered badge to enable clear identification. In order to create an environment that is consistent with Islamic principles, the format of our events is carefully managed to minimise unnecessary ‘free-mixing’ while ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to be introduced. While some Muslim marriage events have chosen to replicate Western styles of ‘speed-dating’ based on one-to-one meetings lasting 2-3 minutes, we have developed an alternative method based on a group rotation that allows for all participants to meet within initial small groups where, with the help of a group facilitator, participants are encouraged to introduce themselves and offer responses to a series of ice-breaker questions with some light-hearted questions. After introductions in small groups, the women remain seated while men are asked to move onto the next group and continue introductions and rotations until all participants have been introduced. People are encouraged to make note of anyone they are interested in speaking to further.

Group ice-breaking sessions are facilitated in circles of around 5 male’s and 5 female’s, which provide an opportunity to meet and view in an Islamic manner, gauge opinions and standpoints in life before making an ‘informed’ decision whether to meet the person later on. Group sessions are chaired by experienced facilitators maintaining the conversations which last around on average 7-10 minutes.

One-to-One meetings

The second part of the event focuses on facilitating one-to-one meetings between interested parties where they are free to exchange contact details if they choose to. Friends or mahrams are strongly encouraged to attend to give moral support in the whole process. We try to arrange a minimum of 5 meetings or more subject to interest from both parties. We can not promise interest from either side and can not take blame for no interest at all. All confirmed meetings, declines, interests, follow ups after the event, and viewing of profiles are managed through our Marriage Event Website

Follow up Services

Most participants tend to meet everyone at the event and exchange details but we also give the opportunity to communicate after the event via our online database service –www.nisfulimaanmarriage.com – Full details of the follow up service is explained on the day of the event.

Need Assistance?

You can contact our Events team Monday – Saturday 11am to 5pm on 020 7247 7719 / 07985 224655 and we will be happy to help you. Halal but Un-Islamic (IIDR) @ London Tickets
Sep 15 @ 9:00 am – 6:30 pm

The last 300 years of Muslim history has witnessed the gap between law and ethics widen. Over time, the discipline of law has repeatedly lost its connection with the ethical aspect of Islam. The Islamic faith has been reduced to a simplistic code of halal and haram. But could something halal also technically be un-Islamic? It can be and it is. Discover how and why at this unique one day course on Saturday 15th September.

When fiqh is separated from ethics, the phenomenon of the ‘halal but un-Islamic’ materialises. Let Shaykh Sharif MH al-Banna, one of our most popular lecturers and IIDR Founder, guide you through this legal and ethical minefield. Expect to cover the methods behind legal juristic thought and the role of ethics in our everyday lives. You will consider topical subjects from an entirely new view, such as:

Food: Whilst the meat we consume may be halal, is the entire animal’s eco-system?
Finance: what is ‘Islamic’ about Islamic Finance beyond dealing with legal loopholes in order to frame it as Shariah-compliant?
Art and Music: How do we justify the celebrity obsession and pop culture that has crept into the ‘Islamic’ nasheed and music industry?
Hooked? We are too. Sign up now and we’ll see you there.

The Qur’an describes three groups of people in relation to their response to the Qur’an; believers, unbelievers and hypocrites. The latter group is considered the most dangerous ‘enemies’ to the believers as they profess to be among them but inwardly work against their interests. Muslims are asked to ‘beware’ of the characteristics of the hypocrites so they do not follow these traits as they can result in the downfall and disintegration of the community. In this Seminar, we will identify some of the characteristics of hypocrites mentioned in different parts of the Qur’an and also explore ways we can help rid of hypocrisy in our midst.
