PSC Apartheid Conference: Justice in Palestine (Rebecca Vilkomerson) @ London Tickets
Nov 3 @ 9:00 am – 4:30 pm
PSC Apartheid Conference: Justice in Palestine (Rebecca Vilkomerson) @ London @ Resource for London | England | United Kingdom

It is no longer controversial to draw parallels between Israel and the former apartheid regime in South Africa. In July of this year Israel passed the clearly discriminatory ‘Jewish Nation State’ law. Since then, the use of the term ‘apartheid’ to describe Israel has burst into the public consciousness.

But the institutionalised discrimination that the Palestinian people face did not begin in July 2018. Instead, it has been central to the foundation and maintenance of the State of Israel from the start.

The longevity of Israel’s apartheid system has been recognised by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), who produced a comprehensive report that concluded “Israel has established an Apartheid regime that dominates the Palestinian people as a whole.”

Taking the ESWCA report as its foundation, on 3 November 2018, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign will be hosting a conference in London bringing together experts from around the world to examine how the system of apartheid is imposed upon Palestinians. We will look at the response required from activists to support the Palestinian struggle, principally through the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Join us at this unique conference to learn from leading experts about Israel’s system of apartheid, and help us organise against it, standing with Palestinians in their fight for freedom and equality.

Speakers
Rebecca Vilkomerson: Rebecca is the Executive Director of the US-based organisation Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP). Since its foundation in 1996 JVP has been central in supporting the Palestinian struggle for freedom, justice and equality. Recently, JVP was one of over 40+ Jewish organisations from across the world, who signed a ground breaking statement opposing the equation of antisemitism and criticism of Israel.

Rima Khalaf: Rima is the former Deputy Prime Minister of Jordan, who served as the Executive Director of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) from 2010-17. Under her lead, the ESCWA authored a report confirming that Israeli practises towards the Palestinian people met the definition of Apartheid under International Law.

Virginia Tilley: Virginia is a Professor of Political Science at the Southern Illinois University in the United States. She specializes in the comparative and international politics of ethnic and racial conflict. Having wide ranging research experience, she has authored numerous policy papers and book-length studies, including The One State Solution. She also edited Beyond Occupation: Apartheid, Colonialism and International Law in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, a co-authored legal study of Israel’s policies in the OPTs.

Nadia Hijab: Nadia is an author, policy analyst and public speaker. She is the co-founder and board director of Al Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network. Further, she is a co-founder and former co-chair of the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, currently sitting on its advisory board. She is the author of Womanpower: The Arab debate on women at work and co-author of Citizens Apart: A Portrait of Palestinians in Israel.

Diana Buttu(via Skype): Diana is a Palestinian-Canadian Lawyer specializing in negotiations and international law. She is a former spokesperson for the Palestine Liberation Organization, and served as negotiator in Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations. She was also part of the Palestinian negotiating team that assisted in the successful litigation of Israel’s Apartheid Wall before the International Court of Justice.

Other Speakers and Facilitators Include:

Hazem Jamjoum: Hazem is an academic and activist, whose work focuses on political- economy approaches to Israeli colonialism and Palestinian elite formation.

Alys Estapé: Alys is the Europe Co-ordinator for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions National Committee (BNC).

Ryvka Barnard: Senior Campaigns Officer, on Militarism and Security at War on Want.

Huda Elmi: Huda is an activist, who currently serves as a CLP representative on the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee.

Islamic Geometry Weekend Workshops (Samira Mian) @ Manchester Tickets
Nov 3 @ 11:00 am – Nov 4 @ 5:00 pm
Islamic Geometry Weekend Workshops (Samira Mian) @ Manchester @ The Art Space | England | United Kingdom

Whether you come to the one day Saturday or half day Sunday workshops, the principle of what we’ll do remains the same: We draw layers of lines and circles step by step using a compass and straight edge and create a complex underlying grid. From this a beautiful pattern emerges. We outline, trace and transfer the pattern to watercolour paper, to be decorated using watercolour pencils & paints.

In our full day Saturday workshops, we’ll explore several patterns before choosing the one that will be brought to life with colour. On Sundays, we will take one pattern through the stages to complete a colourful piece in watercolours.

The patterns created will be different for all workshop, So you can attend one or both of the weekend dates and learn something different each and every time. Each weekend will have a theme to allow us to gain greater insight in that particular era, location or family of patterns. Each time we’ll journey back in time to a different part of the Islamic Lands to celebrate the intellect of the unknown artists and geometers who created such beauty:

4th & 5th August: Ottoman architecture can be seen throughout Turkey and emerged in the 14th and 15th Century. The masjids of Istanbul create a distinct skyline of domes and minarets. The interiors of these buildings, the doors, doorways & minbars especially are often a treasure trove of Islamic Geometric Patterns. The carved stone sided minbars, the intricate wooden doors and the painted decoration of doorways all have a distinct style which set them apart from other patterns from across the Islamic world.

29th & 30th September: The Jerusalem Patterns come from Masjid Al Aqsa, a place and mosque of great historical & religious importance for muslims. Contained within it is the minbar of Saladin, an intricately designed wooden pulpit from the 12th century with a variety of different patterns coving each panel. It was placed in Masjid Al Aqsa, on the conquest of Jerusalem by Saladin where it remained for almost 800 years. In 1969 a great fire destroyed the minbar and much of the interior of the masjid. Thus begun the quest and project to reconstruct the Minbar. A project that was documented beautifully in the book The Minbar of Saladin: Reconstructing a Jewel of Islamic Art, by Lynette Singer and accompanying documentry, Stairway to Heaven.

3rd & 4th November: The intricate geometric Patterns of Morocco, or Al Maghreb, can be seen widely in the architecture and decorative arts. The maghrebi style of Morocco shares many similarities with the Andalusian style of Southern Spain, a nod to their shared history and the spread of Islam to these regions by the Ummayads in the 7th and 8th Century CE. In Morocco, it continued to develop and become more distinctly Moroccan under the under the Nasrid and Merinid Dynasties, flourishing especially in the 14th Century. The Zellige tilework made from individually chiseled geometric tiles set into a plaster base are used widely to ornament walls, ceilings, fountains, floors, pools and tables. My favourite buildings in Fes, Medrassa Bou Innania and Medressa Attarine epitomise this intricate & sophisticated beauty.

All the workshops are suitable for participants aged 14+, no experience is needed and all resources & materials are provided. A pack of watercolour, tracing and drawing paper is given to each participant, with spare papers to take home. A step by step PDF guide for the patterns created in the workshop is also emailed to every participant. Maximum capacity of 12, so please book your place in advance using the PayPal button. Any questions, feel free to contact me. All bookings receive a confirmation by email, please be sure your check your PayPal account email address junk mail or spam folder.

If more than 14 days in advance of the workshop: A full refund or transfer to an equivalent workshop on an alternative date.

If 7 to 14 days in advance of the workshop: I can transfer your place to an equivalent workshop on an alternative date.

The Chartist Fighting for Equal Rights (Mend) @ Newport @ Civic Centre | Wales | United Kingdom

The Chartist was a working-class movement, which emerged in 1836. The aim of the Chartists was to gain political rights and influence for the working classes. On the 4th of Nov 1839, Newport brave working class uprose and fought for equal political rights. This month marks the 179th anniversary of the Chartist movement. We raise the questions whether such fight is still needed today and what have we done to challenge inequality, bigotry and xenophobia.
