This two day course will explore the rich culture of pre -Islamic and Islamic poetry. Dating back to pre-
Islamic Arabia, poetry is one of the oldest and most esteemed forms of express in the Islamic world.
Islamic poetry spread across Persia, Africa, Asia and Spain, and was written in exaltation of Allah and
His Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم .(It was also written in praise of kings, to profess love, and provide political
commentary. This course will cover well known pre-Islamic poetry such as Mu’allaqat and Islamic poetry
written by Jalaluddin Rumi, Allama Iqbal, and others exploring their poetic style and the vibrant literary
heritage they left.
