On this course, students will learn the art of tehzip, the art of ornamentation with gold, in the Ottoman tradition.

In tehzip, gold, pigment, and stylised motifs are used to decorate manuscripts. By the end of this course, students will be able to draw their own design and decorate it using paint and gold.

On the course students will:

learn about common motifs such as rumi (clouds) and flowers
learn how to draw these motifs, and the rules for drawing in a composition
practice working with a brush
draw their own composition
finish their designs using traditional painting and illumination techniques
Who is this course for?
All levels and abilities are welcome.

What do I need to bring to class?
Students are asked to bring their own brushes. You will need:

1 pointed round watercolour brush in size 00
1 pointed round watercolour brush in size 0
It is helpful, but not required, to bring your own palette with wells so you can take home pigment and continue working on your piece as needed.
What days do I attend?
Monday – Friday
